The first sound is a cup meeting its saucer. Then a chair being pulled across stone, the turn of a page, someone asking for another piece of bread. Breakfast at the imagined Aurel House is a collection of small sounds, none of them urgent.
We begin with things that need little explanation: bread with a crisp crust, yogurt in a handmade bowl, fruit cut when it is ready to be eaten. Honey catches the light. Olive oil is poured with an unsteady, generous hand. Coffee arrives when you sit down.
The tableware matters because it disappears into the experience. The bowl fits your palm. The cup keeps its warmth. No two glazed surfaces are quite alike, which seems a useful thing to remember at the beginning of a day.
Leave a little room
A breakfast should leave space for the rest of the morning. There might be eggs with herbs, roasted tomatoes or a small piece of cake. There need not be everything. Our sample menu is a starting point for this fictional kitchen, with seasonal variation written into its character.
The best seat
It could be under the pergola, where the stripes of shade move between courses. It could be inside by the open doors. The best seat is the one where you stop thinking about where you should be next.
